The Prophet Zechariah

This is what the LORD Almighty says: “Many peoples and the inhabitants of many cities will yet come, and the inhabitants of one city will go to another and say, ‘Let us go at once to entreat the LORD and seek the LORD Almighty. I myself am going.’  And many peoples and powerful nations will come to Jerusalem to seek the LORD Almighty and to entreat him.” –Zechariah 8.20-22

In the book I’m reading by Jonathan Edwards, he takes his text from Zechariah 8.20-22, which he interprets as a prophecy of a future glorious advancement of God’s Church.  From what I’ve gathered so far, Edwards’ eschatology is decidedly postmillenial, which was fairly common for his era.

In his exegesis of the text, Edwards sees an account of how this future glorious advancement of God’s Church is to come about; he sees this happening as people gather in from different towns and countries and taking up a joint resolution and coming into visible agreement that they will seek God by united and extraordinary prayer, that he would manifest Himself to His Church and grant them the fruits of His presence.

Augustine Confronting Heresy

The Apostle Paul, in a pivotal prophetic passage, traces all doctrinal aberration to its deeper cause and its ultimate source in the invisible demonic agents behind visible human actors.  He presents the perversion of truth and godliness as the direct work of Satan’s minions, the demons.

“Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons”¹

The “deceitful spirits” are the deceiving “demons” who are ceaselessly diligent in perverting the truth and in leading God’s people away from sound doctrine.

As the Church is guided “into all truth” by the “Spirit of truth”², who is the foundation of all true inspiration, so He is opposed in His benevolent work by Satan, “the spirit of error”³, the arch-enemy of truth and the great deceiver, who, with his demonic helpers, is the source of all false inspiration.  But since Satan is a mere creature, and unlike the Holy Spirit, neither infinite nor omnipresent, he requires the aid of an innumerable host of wicked, deluding spirits to carry on effectively his vast program of doctrinal corruption and deception.  As the “Spirit of truth” inspires the genuine prophets and teachers of God⁴, so the “spirit of error” and his spiritual satellites, energize the “many false prophets” who “are gone out into the world”⁵.  Hence the Apostle John, like the Apostle Paul, traces error to its real source in satanic and demonic activity, rather than in the human agent.

What do SBC Churches in the 21st Century Need Most in Order to Fulfill the Great Commission? [Part One] With Insights from E. M. Bounds’ Classic, Power Through Prayer «.

This link has nothing to do with my ongoing doses of weirdness from the world wide web.  Instead, it is a subject a little closer to home for me.

I was raised in a Southern Baptist church, and have seeen the fruits of the Conservative Resurgence.  It’s an amazing thing; nonetheless, the world is moving forward, and my Southern Baptist brethren are going to have to move forward with it.

Several years ago I bought a one volume compilation of all of E.M. Bounds work on prayer, and thought it was amazing!  It really help jump start my prayer life, and I’ve recommended it widely.  I think the author of the above article is right on track - the Baptists in the 21st Century would do well to head what Rev. Bounds had to say about prayer and power in the church.

Augustine Refuting A Heretic

Since I’ve been on the subject of heresy in the last few days, I thought I’d dig a little deeper - to explain where heresy originates.  In order to do that, I’m going to have to cover some basics to start out.

The entire body of revealed truth, as contained in the Bible, which is inspired and God-given, is the great bulwark against all wicked power and evil supernaturalism.  Implicit faith in its teachings and approval of its precepts constitute the only, but all-sufficient, guarantee against Satanic subtlety and demonic cunning.  As long as Scriptural truth is accepted and followed, Satan and his minions are stripped of their power to harm or lead the child of God astray.  It is only when revealed truth is neglected or rejected, either in whole or in part, that the powers of darkness have opportunity to inflict damage and work havoc upon the Christian.

It’s not surprising, with that in mind, to find that Satanic and demonic assault is directed particularly and relentlessly against the Word of God, nor is it amazing to discover that attack against the veritable citadel of revealed truth is perhaps the most conspicuous and potent role played by demons.

There are two great mistakes that are made by the majority of Christians.  The first is to refuse to believe that there is any such thing as demons; for me, it brings to mind the great quote from The Usual Suspects “The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist.”  Satan and demons are real, and that must be kept in mind.  The other great mistake is to go the route of the extreme charismatics, and blame everything on demons and the Devil.  Hence the reason I’ve put “biblical demonology” in the title; our goal is to be biblical in how we view the work of Satan and demons.  Which brings us back to our subject.

After this comment on the T.D. Jakes post I decided that maybe some theology needed to be explained.  I would like to point out that heretic isn’t a title I throw out lightly.  Charging a shepherd with heresy is a serious thing - and “Bishop” Jakes meets the definition with his denial of the Triune nature of the Godhead.

He gives lip service to belief in the Trinity, but embraces Sabellian modalism, a very old heresy that denies that there is one God who exists in three co-equal, co-eternal, and co-existent Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Instead, “Bishop” Jakes teaches that there is one God who exists in three manifestations or modes—not three eternal Persons.

On the T. D. Jakes Ministries Web site, an older but still accessible version of their Statement of Faith reads, “There is one God, creator of all things, infinitely perfect, and existing in three Manifestations: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.”¹ The position taken by T. D. Jakes Ministries is problematic. The problem lies in the word “manifestation.”  Manifestation is a modalistic term often used by Oneness Pentecostals.  Modalism views Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as different modes of God’s activity rather than three separate persons.
